BPV? BOV? WTF!
« on: March 01, 2010, 11:25:57 PM »

Ok everyone...I have a question that I cant seem to get a straight answer on. Do I need a Bypass Valve, a Blowoff Valve, Nothing? My setup is below.

2.3 Stock slightly ported head with Ranger Cam
Ported Upper and lower intakes with stock TB
Ported Exhaust Manifold
Garrett Hybrid T3/T4 Turbo
Stock TC Intercooler
Gillis Valve with stock Wastegate

Do I need a Blowoff Valve, a Bypass Valve, or nothing? I don't plan on running huge amounts of boost (lots but not huge amounts!) What is the difference between the two? Where would I mount them if needed? Please help!

A Bypass valve returns the boosted air back into the intake track.  it typically doesn't have that PHA noise when you let off the gas.  A blow off valve does the samething but vents to atmosphere and gives you that noise.  The main purpose is to relieve pressure build up in the intake tract when you are on the boost and then shut off the thrttle closing the throttle blades.   With low boost do you need it?  Good question.  I think the better question would be that if you are making boost and shut the throttle where does  the pressure go????  it has to go back agains the flow of the turbo.  doesn't do it any good.  My vote would be at least a BOV just to protect the system.

Also consider if you are having boost controller issues and the boost spikes and you let off the throttle.  Suddenly you are in high boost conditions but without a BOV or BPV you will have no protection for your intake system.

If you have a stock metered air system (VAM), then a BPV is a better idea.  I have run both with mine, and with the BOV makes the ECU think there is more air in the engine than there really is, and doing so makes it run rich during shifts (backfires and pops).

I am running the stock 87-88 TC VAM. So the BPV is the better idea. Where in the system would the BPV mount? What about mounting for the BOV? Which is more more complicated system to work with?

The only difficult part is how to connet between the VAM and the turbo.  Other than that they are almost identical.  You can search this and find many opinons, but I think most prefer to install it between the I/C and the T/B.  Connect the vac. line between the T/B and the head.
