There are no stock 5 lug axles that will fit properly in a Pinto/Mustang II 8" housing. Bill

I thought that you could trim a smidge off of '65-'66 Mustang axles??? The whole assembly is listed as 1/4" wider than a Mustang II and the splines should be more than long enough. (It's what I plan on doing.)

You COULD install them in a Pinto housing, BUT the fact that the Maverick rear is .5" narrower means that the axle will engage the splines .25" less on each side. This is ABOUT 25% of the contact area, and based on simple math would be SIGNIFICANTLY weaker VS. the correct axles. This is not to say that you can't use other 'factory' axles, just that there are things that might need to be done or modified. The early Stangs and some other 8"ers take different bearings and or retainers. Bill

Not arguing! I always put new axle bearings when installing rearends of unknown past. If push comes to shove, the following is from Dutchman Axles' website http://www.dutchmanaxles.com/: Axle Shop ServicesPrices are single/pair Change pattern-axle flanges (No plugging or flange buildup) $35 $65 Change pattern-axle flanges (Plug old holes) $60 $110 <----------Change pattern-axle flanges (Build up flange OD & plug holes) $120 $195 Turn down oversize drum pilot register (If studs are removed) $20 $40 Looks like probably $110 to have the pattern changed by a top-notch shop. Well, that certainly shows that the pattern can be changed without plugging the flange. Good to know.
Actually, the price isn't bad at all. Good find, Bill!

You know i am just not sure about this re-drilled axle flange without at least plugging the other holes. I feel there has to be aloss of strength in the flange with holes. I guess it really matters on how much power you are pushing through those axles....

Good point, Jim!
$45 (locally to me) to plug the holes while changing patterns is probably cheap insurance.
