So, I took the Pinto to DEQ this afternoon to get it smog tested. I’ve heard all the bad stories, and I read everything that I could about getting emissions down.
When I got there, the young lady at the entrance asked, “Renewal?
“No, it hasn’t been thru DEQ for 20 years.”
“What year is?”
“1977.”
“Lane 3.”
So I follow lane 3 around to the proper entrance to the testing building and stop where it says STOP. 30 seconds later, a young guy waves me into the second testing position. As he motions for me to stop, he says, “I’ll bet that’s not stock.”
??? Could it be the FMIC in place of the grille? The whine of the fuel pump? Or the rumble of the exhaust. LOL
“Nope,” says I, popping the hood.
“Don’t need that,” says tester number two. Then he tells tester number one, “He has a cat.”
Thirty seconds later, tester number two ask, “Can I look under the hood?”
“Sure.”
After looking and closing the hood tight, he asks, “How many horses?”
Shrugging, I say, “200 maybe?”
“Sweet,” he says, weirdly echoing my buddy that died this winter.
Up comes tester number one, “$21.00. No problems.”
So the results read:
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .HC(PPM). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .CO(%). . . . . . . . . . . Smoke: Pass Noise: Pass
I’m thinking that there might be an exhaust leak??
Thanks to all here for their help, especially Bill with his write-ups here and on fordpinto.com.

OBTW, if they checked to see if the charcoal cannister was visible (it is), they certainly never looked to see if it was plugged in.
