Sorry 77pinto, been a crappy couple days, had the car running so good, and now this, I'm running Esslingers wide belt round tooth kit, along with there, crank power pulley, the last time I did this I used the factory gear set, and then swapped it out on the engine stand, and I can't remember how I set it,
pinturbo75 I figured I had it 180 out when I read Esslinger's guide, pulled the valve cover, and found it with lobes down, so I reset it, and left it till I got some more info, so crank keyway straight up and the cam dow pin straight down should be correct? just making sure I read your thread correct,
I can't believe I even got it to run as far out as I had it, although the Electromotive ing. fires every time around, (they call it waste spark) that must have been the only reason it ran at all, the car still ran 107 mph in the 1/4 last night, just wouldn't build boost till around the 330 mark very piggy off the line, and it was running way rich.......
Thanks for the help, I'll try it after work tomorrow and see what happens...

I have no marks!!!!! no marks on the crank gear, no marks on the cam gear, and no stock timing cover......
I did not say you did, nor did I remove the marks from your engine.
With the crank pulley, I said front cover not timing cover. Did you put an aftermarket crank pulley on it? If so, how did you line it up before?
What I attempted to say is that you can alline the engine using the stock pulleys as a refference.

if you had the cam keyway pointing up you have the cam 180 out.. you need the crank keyway pointing straight up and the cam keyway pointing straight down. with the cam inthis positiion it will put the factory cam gear pointer on the face of the gear inline with the ausilliary shaft retaining bolt...... so you should be able to run a string from the crank to the cam and have both keyways lined up and facing each other and then run the string from the cam center bolt to the center bolt on the aux gear pully and the stock cam gear pointer should be inline with the string ... you could probably get away with this unit if you dont want the factory covers... its a nice piece.......

I have no marks!!!!! no marks on the crank gear, no marks on the cam gear, and no stock timing cover, I got looking at Ellslingers web site, it doen't tell you how to time the cam, but it does tell you how to do a backyard style cam degree to get the adjustable cam gear set, and it states to have the intake and exh. lobes up and level/parallel to the mechined valve cover surface, which makes sense, and puts the dow on the cam at about the 5 o'clock position...... now I'm really confused... someone must have a engine engine on a stand that can look.....

With the crank gear mark alineded with the mark on the front cover, and the use of the stock pulleys you put a string from the center cam bolt to the center of the aux shaft bolt and line the 'mark' on the cam pulley to the string. You could pull the cam bolt and make a mark on the aftermarket pulley based on the keyway and where it is on the stock one.
That just does the cam timing only, but to do the ignition timing, you need a pointer.

OK here's the deal, I went out to start the Pinto yesterday getting ready to head to the drags to see what kind of trap speed it would do with the stock tires/wheels, just for shits and giggles, we'll I hit the key and it started and died, tried it again, no compression, opened the hood and there I found my timing belt tensioner had came apart and the belt was not off, so I tore it apart and tried to time it, but I think it is off. I don't have the front cover, nor do I have the stock pullies, so I need someone that knows to jump in here and tell me how to time it by using a string, correct me if I'm wrong here please, I have the crankshaft with the keyway straight up, (should be TDC), using the dow pin on the camshaft, I have the dow pin up (dow pin on the top side of the cam pointed up) and I ran a string throught the dow pin, straight through the center of the cam to the aux. shaft, Main question,,,, is this correct? or am I supose to string it through the pin/bolt on the tensioner? last time I did this I had the stock pullies and timed it that way, I don't have those anymore, I have the Erslinger wide round tooth kit, and it's not marked I did get it to run and I did make it to the track, but it's not right, down on power and I had to take about 10% fuel out of it just to get it to run under boost.. I'd like to get the timing set correctly and then run a compression test, as I'm told the cam I have is an interference (sp) cam

Anyone that saw the Louie episode this past Tuesday night happen to notice what kind of car was used for the conversation between "Louie" and his "Mother"?
If you missed it, you should be able to see it on Hulu in a few days.
Louie used MY car (then I sold it to Carlisle) the end of May for the shoot. I admit, its not my favorite episode, but I like to see 'my' car.
I would have posted this sooner but I have been very busy, AND I did not want to say anything until I KNEW they used what they shot.

howdy fellas. Thanks to the help of plenty of people on various forums my pile of parts and two cars should all combine soon to make one running pinto. Here is the parts list so far
1 whole 75 pinto runabout. should be out of the paint and body shop monday. 1 whole 1987 t/c donor car. 1 whole long block. I plan to build the bottom end and send the cylinder head off to bo for my high boost setup when i get the swap done.
parts- aside from above, i have upper and lower intakes from 40bob. upper rotated 90 degrees, fitted with 65mm throttle body. stainless header from bo, with tial wastegate. a garret g28r. i dont think i am going to run this turbo, as it really isnt going to give me a whole lot more boost. it may be for sale shortly. 2 intercoolers, both of pretty good size. a greddy BOV. still looking for a larger turbo.... a fully built c-4, reverse valve body, kevlar bands, 2800 stall converter. Al driveshaft from a 96 aerostar. A whole driveline from a 74 mustang II. Detroit locker, 4.11. Megasquirt...? still thinking very hard about this one, i am worried about opening that can of worms. any feedback on it?
I also got a lead on a whole running xr4ti, we will see how that goes.
Looking at this list i actually got enough parts to do another swap. LoL. anyone got a pinto for sale?
